Lionel Richie has confirmed that he will return to the judges’ panel of American Idol for its upcoming 25th season, putting to rest questions about whether his recent health problems would affect his television commitments.

The 77-year-old music legend made the announcement on September 24 during fellow American Idol judge Luke Bryan’s concert at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. Richie appeared via video, joining Bryan and Carrie Underwood as they revealed that the three judges would return for another season of the long-running singing competition. Longtime host Ryan Seacrest is also expected to return.

Richie opened his appearance by reflecting on his relationship with his fellow judges, telling the Nashville audience that some of his greatest friendships began in the city.

He then teased the announcement before Bryan revealed that the trio would be returning for the show’s landmark 25th season.

The announcement came at a particularly significant moment for Richie, who has faced a series of health-related interruptions during 2026.

Earlier this month, his representative confirmed that the singer had undergone a procedure for atrial fibrillation, commonly known as AFib, an irregular heart rhythm. According to his representative, the procedure went perfectly and Richie was doing well, although he would take some time away from performing before returning to the stage.

The latest medical episode followed two earlier incidents. In June, Richie became dizzy during a concert in St. Paul, Minnesota, forcing him to briefly stop performing. He subsequently resumed his tour.

Then, following an August 29 performance in St. Louis, Richie was hospitalized for several days for cardiac-related tests after experiencing difficulties during the concert.

The singer had been touring with Earth, Wind & Fire on the Sing a Song All Night Long tour.

His latest health situation resulted in several tour dates being canceled or postponed while he recovered. Nevertheless, his representatives have indicated that he intends to return to performing.

Richie’s American Idol return means viewers will again see him working alongside Bryan and Underwood. Underwood joined the judging panel in 2025 after winning the fourth season of the competition, while Richie and Bryan have been judges since 2018.

The forthcoming season will also mark another change for American Idol, with production moving away from Hollywood. The new season is scheduled to premiere in 2027.

For Richie, the announcement represents a continuation of one of the most visible chapters of his later career. Beyond his decades-long music career, which includes Grammy-winning hits such as “Hello,” “All Night Long” and “Truly,” his role on American Idol has introduced him to a new generation of performers and viewers.

His return, however, will come with considerable attention on his recovery. While Richie has confirmed his commitment to the show, his recent health issues have already demonstrated that his live-performance schedule may require adjustments.

For now, American Idol fans have confirmation that the veteran singer will once again occupy his familiar seat when the competition returns in 2027.
