Ace Hollywood actor Johnny Depp is continuing his return to Hollywood with the release of the first trailer for “Day Drinker,” an action thriller that reunites him with longtime screen collaborator Penélope Cruz and pairs the two stars with Outer Banks actress Madelyn Cline.
Lionsgate released the first trailer on September 24, offering audiences an eerie glimpse of the mystery surrounding Depp’s character and the dangerous world into which Cline’s character becomes drawn.
The film, directed by Marc Webb and written by Zach Dean, is scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 26, 2027.
“Day Drinker” follows Lorna, a bartender working aboard a private yacht, played by Cline.
Her routine takes an unexpected turn when she encounters a mysterious passenger portrayed by Depp.
Their meeting ultimately pulls them into the orbit of a criminal figure played by Cruz, with the three characters connected in ways that gradually become more complicated.
The trailer deliberately keeps much of the story under wraps. Depp appears as a grey-haired, enigmatic character whose identity and motives remain unclear.
At one point, his character raises the possibility that the events unfolding around him could be connected to revenge, something darker, or even a ghost story, adding a supernatural edge to the film’s mystery.
The movie has been described as combining action, thriller, mystery and horror elements.
Its yacht setting provides an isolated backdrop for a story involving crime, secrets and unexpected relationships.
For Depp, “Day Drinker” represents another significant step in his return to major Hollywood productions.
His Hollywood career faced a major disruption following his highly publicized legal battle with former wife Amber Heard. After appearing less frequently in major American studio productions, Depp starred in the 2023 French film Jeanne du Barry and directed Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness. “Day Drinker” and the upcoming Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol represent major studio-backed projects in his return to the international mainstream.
The new film also marks another reunion between Depp and Cruz. The pair previously appeared together in Blow, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Murder on the Orient Express. “Day Drinker” therefore becomes their fourth feature-film collaboration, although their new roles place them on opposite sides of a mysterious criminal story.
Cline, meanwhile, steps into a major feature-film role following her success as Sarah Cameron in Netflix’s Outer Banks.
The actress plays what director Webb has described as an important emotional center of the film, placing her character at the heart of the unfolding mystery.
The supporting cast includes Manu Ríos, Arón Piper, Juan Diego Botto and Anika Boyle.
The production is backed by Lionsgate, Thunder Road and other production companies, with producers including Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Adam Kolbrenner, Zach Dean and Nathan Kahane.
With its combination of crime, mystery, horror and action, “Day Drinker” is positioning itself as a stylish thriller built around three major characters whose lives collide aboard a luxury yacht.
“Day Drinker” is scheduled for theatrical release on March 26, 2027.
