The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the reported death of popular Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo at the age of 40.

Alex Known for his charm, talent, and commanding screen presence, the actor’s passing has sparked widespread grief among fans, colleagues, and admirers across Nigeria and beyond. Reports indicate that he died on May 12, 2026, in a hospital in Lagos after a prolonged illness.

Born Alexx Ekubo-Okwaraeke on April 10, 1986, in Arochukwu, he grew up to become one of Nollywood’s most recognizable actors.

He attended the University of Calabar, where he studied Law before choosing a different path in entertainment. His breakthrough came after emerging first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria pageant, which launched his successful career in modelling and acting.

Ekubo made his acting debut in Sinners in the House and rose to stardom with his role in Weekend Getaway. Over the years, he appeared in more than 100 films, including Omo Ghetto: The Saga, The Bling Lagosians, and A Sunday Affair, earning a reputation as one of the most versatile actors in the Nigerian film industry.

In the months leading to his death, Alexx Ekubo had noticeably withdrawn from public life. Fans had observed his prolonged absence from social media since late 2024, sparking speculation about his wellbeing. Reports that surfaced after his passing suggested he had been privately battling cancer for nearly two years, with some accounts identifying it as advanced liver cancer.

Despite keeping his condition away from the public eye, reports indicate the actor underwent extensive treatment in an effort to survive. According to accounts from entertainment blogs and media reports, he sought specialist care and allegedly underwent major medical procedures, including treatment aimed at managing late-stage cancer complications.

Close associates said he remained hopeful and fought quietly, determined to recover and return to the screen.

Beyond the screen, Ekubo was admired for his humanitarian work, style, and youth advocacy. In 2020, he was named among the “Most Influential People of African Descent” under 40, a recognition that reflected his impact beyond entertainment.

Friends and colleagues have since described him as warm, generous, and deeply committed to his craft.

Though his life was cut short, Alexx Ekubo’s story remains one of ambition, resilience, and legacy. His final battle with illness showed a private struggle for survival, while his career left a lasting imprint on Nollywood. He will be remembered not only for the roles he played on screen but also for the courage with which he faced his final days.
