Nigerian gospel singer, songwriter and Pastor Nathaniel Bassey has made history after surpassing one billion views on YouTube, reportedly becoming the first African gospel artiste to achieve the landmark feat on the video-sharing platform.

Statistics displayed on his official YouTube channel, Nathaniel Bassey Main, showed that it had accumulated approximately 1.014 billion views and 5.24 million subscribers as of November 1, 2026.

The achievement marks a significant milestone in the career of the gospel minister, whose music, worship sessions and online prayer gatherings have attracted audiences across Africa and other parts of the world.

Created on March 4, 2011, Bassey’s YouTube channel has steadily grown through the release of gospel songs, live ministrations and inspirational worship content.

His achievement coincides with the growing popularity of the Hallelujah Challenge, an online prayer and worship programme he established in June 2017.

What began as a midnight worship session streamed from his living room on Instagram Live has developed into an international Christian gathering, attracting thousands of participants from different countries.

The initiative, which encourages participants to dedicate time to praise, worship and prayer, has become one of the defining features of Bassey’s ministry.

The October 2026 edition further demonstrated the programme’s growing digital influence. Its opening session reportedly attracted more than four million views, while the grand finale, known as the Hallelujah Festival, recorded over 4.3 million views, according to channel-tracking figures.

Beyond the Hallelujah Challenge, Bassey has built a strong musical following through popular gospel compositions, including ‘Imela’, ‘Onise Iyanu’, ‘Olowogbogboro’, ‘You Are God’, ‘Yahweh Sabaoth’ and ‘Tobechukwu’.

His distinctive blend of contemporary gospel, traditional worship, hymns and trumpet performances has earned him recognition among gospel music lovers.

Interestingly, the minister has consistently maintained that the Hallelujah Challenge is primarily about spiritual devotion rather than financial returns.

In November 2025, addressing conversations about monetising the programme, Bassey said he had no intention of doing so because he had not received divine instruction to commercialise the initiative.

His latest accomplishment underscores the growing international reach of Nigerian gospel music and the influence of digital platforms in spreading Christian worship beyond geographical boundaries.

For African gospel music, the achievement represents another significant demonstration that locally produced spiritual content can command a massive global audience.

With more than one billion cumulative views, Nathaniel Bassey has established a remarkable digital legacy, transforming an intimate midnight worship initiative into a global movement.
