Lionel Messi has brought the curtain down on his remarkable international career with a dazzling performance as Argentina defeated Benin 3-0 in Buenos Aires.

In what was billed as Messi’s final appearance for the Argentina national team, the 39-year-old forward delivered the kind of performance that has defined his career, scoring one goal and providing two assists to inspire the world champions to victory.

The occasion was about far more than the result. For millions of Argentines, it marked the emotional end of an era that has transformed the country’s football history and given its supporters some of their greatest memories.

Messi, wearing the famous blue-and-white shirt for what could be the final time, was at the centre of Argentina’s attacking display. His vision, movement and technical brilliance remained evident as he repeatedly found openings in a Benin defence determined to make his farewell difficult.

The opening goal sparked celebrations inside the stadium, but the night belonged as much to Messi’s influence as it did to the scoreline.

The Argentine captain continued to create opportunities for his teammates, eventually setting up two more goals as the hosts completed a comfortable 3-0 victory.

The final whistle brought an emotional response from the Buenos Aires crowd. Supporters rose to their feet to celebrate a player who has spent almost two decades carrying the hopes of a football-mad nation.

Messi’s international journey has been extraordinary.

After suffering painful defeats with Argentina earlier in his career, including losses in major finals, the Rosario-born star eventually enjoyed a remarkable transformation in his relationship with the national team.

He led Argentina to victory at the 2021 Copa América, ending a long wait for a major international trophy.

A year later came the ultimate achievement when Messi inspired Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar, winning the tournament that had eluded him throughout much of his career.

He subsequently added another Copa América title, further cementing his status as one of the greatest players in football history.

His departure leaves Argentina confronting a once-unimaginable reality: a national team without Lionel Messi.

For years, Argentina’s attacking strategy, identity and expectations have revolved around the diminutive playmaker.

Generations of supporters grew up watching him produce extraordinary moments, from spectacular goals and decisive passes to moments of individual brilliance capable of changing matches.

Now, coach Lionel Scaloni and the next generation of Argentine stars face the enormous challenge of moving forward without their inspirational leader.

Messi’s farewell, however, was perfectly suited to his legacy. He did not simply walk away. He entertained, created, scored and helped Argentina win.

As the crowd celebrated him one final time, the message was unmistakable: Argentina may eventually find another great footballer, but replacing Lionel Messi will be an entirely different challenge.

The little magician has left the international stage, but his legacy in the white and blue shirt will remain virtually impossible to match.
