The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards delivered a night of nostalgia, star power and major milestones on Sunday, September 27, as the biggest names in music gathered at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater for one of the most anticipated nights on the entertainment calendar.
Hosted by Snoop Dogg, the ceremony was headlined by two generations of pop royalty — Madonna and Taylor Swift — who dominated the winners’ list. Madonna, who entered the night with 13 nominations, emerged as the ceremony’s biggest individual winner with seven Moon Person trophies.
The evening began with a major moment as Madonna returned to the VMAs stage for the first time in 23 years. Her appearance was one of the most anticipated events of the ceremony, marking another chapter in the singer’s extraordinary relationship with the awards show.
Madonna’s haul included Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration alongside Sabrina Carpenter for “Bring Your Love,” Best Dance, Best Cinematography, Best Choreography, Best Long Form Video and Best Album for Confessions II.
Swift, meanwhile, captured the night’s most prestigious competitive prize, Video of the Year, for “The Fate of Ophelia.” She also won Best Direction for “Opalite.” In addition, Swift received the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, recognizing her contribution to visual storytelling and directing. The special honour also cemented her position as the most-awarded artist in VMA history.
The ceremony also celebrated veteran and emerging acts. Nirvana received the prestigious Video Vanguard Award, recognizing the band’s enduring influence on music videos and popular culture.
K-pop also enjoyed a major night. BTS won Best Group, Best K-Pop and Song of the Year for “SWIM.” Lisa won Best Pop for “Dream” featuring Kentaro Sakaguchi, while British newcomer Sienna Spiro took Best New Artist.
Other winners included Bruno Mars, Cardi B and Kehlani, Bad Bunny, Olivia Rodrigo, Ella Langley, Ariana Grande, PinkPantheress and Sabrina Carpenter.
The ceremony featured performances from Madonna, Lisa, RAYE, Shaboozey, Gunna, Sienna Spiro, GENER8ION and Yung Lean, alongside tributes to George Michael and Dolly Parton.
