The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards are shaping up to be one of the ceremony’s most star-studded editions in years, with Madonna making a long-awaited return to the VMA stage.

Taylor Swift preparing to make history and a new generation of artists competing alongside some of music’s biggest names.

The awards will take place on Sunday, September 27, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, marking the first time since 2017 that the VMAs have been staged in California.

Snoop Dogg will host the ceremony, which will be broadcast live on CBS and MTV and streamed on Paramount+.

The biggest headline, however, will be Madonna.

The Queen of Pop is scheduled to open the ceremony with a performance marking her first appearance on the VMAs stage in 23 years.

Her last VMA performance came in 2003, when she shared the stage with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera in one of the show’s most remembered moments. Madonna’s return comes as she leads the nominations for the 2026 awards.

There has been some variation in published nomination totals as additional social categories were announced.

The latest CBS/Paramount information puts Madonna at 13 nominations, while Taylor Swift has 11, followed by Sabrina Carpenter with nine, Ariana Grande with eight and Bruno Mars with six.

Madonna’s nominations are driven heavily by Confessions II – The Film. She is competing for major prizes including Video of the Year and Artist of the Year, while her collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter, “Bring Your Love,” is also nominated for Song of the Year and Best Collaboration.

The Video of the Year category is particularly competitive. The nominees are Ariana Grande’s “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” Bruno Mars’ “I Just Might,” GENER8ION and Yung Lean’s “STORM starring Yung Lean,” Madonna’s “Confessions II – The Film,” Sabrina Carpenter’s “Tears” and Swift’s “The Fate of Ophelia.”

Swift’s night will extend beyond competitive categories. She has already been named the first recipient of MTV’s new Artist Director Honors, recognizing her work behind the camera and contribution to visual storytelling.

The special honor means Swift will reach 31 VMA wins, moving her ahead of Beyoncé’s previous record of 30 and making her the most-awarded artist in VMA history.

Swift is also expected to have another major moment when the music video for “Patient Zero” premieres during the ceremony.

Among the strongest competitive contenders, Madonna and Swift naturally command much of the attention because of their nominations across major categories.

Carpenter and Grande are also heavily represented, while Bruno Mars has six nominations. PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson have five each, while LISA has four.

The Song of the Year race is equally broad, featuring BTS’ “Swim,” Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas,” HUNTR/X’s “Golden,” Madonna and Carpenter’s “Bring Your Love,” Olivia Dean’s “Man I Need,” PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson’s “Stateside” and RAYE’s “WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!”

The Best New Artist category could provide one of the evening’s breakthrough moments. Bella Kay, CORTIS, Magnus Ferrell, Malcolm Todd, Myles Smith, Sienna Spiro and Stella Lefty are competing for the award. CORTIS and Stella Lefty are among the first-time nominees who have received multiple nominations this year.

Other major categories include Best Pop, Best Hip-Hop, Best R&B, Best Alternative, Best Dance, Best Latin, Best K-Pop and Best Country.

The Best Dance category is returning after a seven-year absence, adding another competitive dimension to the ceremony.

While no winner can be known before the envelopes are opened, the nomination pattern identifies several artists to watch.

Madonna has the largest nomination haul and a major performance, Swift combines numerous nominations with a guaranteed historic honor, while Carpenter and Grande enter the ceremony with strong representation across major categories.

The ceremony will also honor rock legends Nirvana, who will receive the prestigious Video Vanguard Award. Performances are expected from Madonna, LISA, RAYE, Shaboozey, Sienna Spiro, GENER8ION and Yung Lean, among others.

A special Dolly Parton tribute featuring Kacey Musgraves and a George Michael tribute involving RAYE, Sombr and Teddy Swims will add further nostalgia to the night.

With Madonna returning after more than two decades, Swift preparing to rewrite the VMA record books and a wide field of established and emerging stars competing for Moon Persons, the 2026 VMAs are set to combine nostalgia, contemporary pop culture and a new generation of music-video talent in Los Angeles.
