Universal Pictures has officially locked in the release date for its highly anticipated Snoop Dogg biopic, with the film set to arrive in cinemas on August 6, 2027.

The project will star Outer Banks actor Jonathan Daviss in the lead role, portraying one of hip-hop’s most influential and recognizable figures.

The announcement marks a major milestone for a film that has been in development for several years.

Fans have eagerly awaited updates since Universal first revealed plans to bring the legendary rapper’s remarkable life story to the big screen.

And with a confirmed release date and principal casting now in place, production is expected to move into full swing in the coming months.

Jonathan Daviss, best known for his breakout role as Pope Heyward in Netflix’s hit series Outer Banks, faces the biggest challenge of his career by stepping into the shoes of the West Coast rap pioneer.

The young actor has earned praise for his emotional performances and screen presence, qualities that reportedly convinced Snoop Dogg and the filmmakers that he was the right person to portray the music icon.

Snoop Dogg himself has expressed confidence in Daviss, describing him as a talented performer capable of capturing not only his appearance but also his personality and spirit.

The rapper said Daviss possesses the dedication and willingness to learn what it takes to bring his extraordinary journey to life on screen.

The biopic will be directed by Craig Brewer, the filmmaker behind acclaimed music dramas including Hustle & Flow. Brewer took over directing duties after earlier plans involving director Allen Hughes evolved during development.

The screenplay has been written by Joe Robert Cole, whose credits include Marvel’s Black Panther films, while Academy Award-winning producer Brian Grazer is among the producers backing the project.

According to Snoop Dogg, the film will not shy away from the difficult chapters of his life. Speaking during CinemaCon, the rapper hinted that audiences should expect an authentic and unfiltered portrayal rather than a sanitized version of his story.

He emphasized that if his life was going to be turned into a movie, it needed to reflect both the triumphs and the hardships that shaped him.

The movie is expected to trace Snoop Dogg’s journey from growing up in Long Beach, California, to becoming one of hip-hop’s defining voices in the 1990s.

It will likely explore his breakthrough alongside Dr. Dre, the success of his debut album Doggystyle, his legal troubles, reinvention over several decades, and his evolution into a mainstream entertainment figure, entrepreneur, television personality and owner of Death Row Records.

Unlike many musicians whose careers faded after their initial success, Snoop Dogg has remained relevant for more than three decades. Beyond music, he has become a cultural ambassador, starring in films and television shows, collaborating with global brands, hosting sporting events, and mentoring emerging artists.

His ability to reinvent himself has made him one of entertainment’s most enduring personalities.

Music biopics have enjoyed a resurgence in recent years with commercial and critical successes such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman, Elvis, and Bob Marley: One Love.

Universal Pictures hopes Snoop Dogg’s story will resonate with audiences by combining the energy of classic hip-hop with a deeply personal narrative about perseverance, ambition and transformation.

With Jonathan Daviss stepping into one of the most recognizable roles in music history and an accomplished creative team guiding the production, expectations are already high. As cameras prepare to roll, the countdown has officially begun for what promises to be one of 2027’s biggest music films, celebrating the life and legacy of a rapper whose influence extends far beyond the recording studio.
