King Charles III will attend a wreath-laying ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial on Wednesday as part of his state visit to the United States, aimed at strengthening ties between United Kingdom and United States.
The four-day visit began in Washington, where Donald Trump welcomed the King and Queen Camilla. However, the trip has been overshadowed by tensions linked to the Iran conflict.
In New York City, the royal couple will meet first responders and families of victims as the world nears the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, which claimed nearly 3,000 lives.
Speaking to the US Congress on Tuesday, Charles said the attacks were “a defining moment for America.” He added, “We stood with you then, and we stand with you now in solemn remembrance of a day that shall never be forgotten.”
Later in the day, Charles, known for his passion for environmental causes, will visit an urban farming initiative focused on youth mentorship and tackling hunger.
Meanwhile, Camilla will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Winnie the Pooh at the New York Public Library, where she is expected to present a specially made toy of Roo.
Charles will also meet investors and business leaders at an event promoting transatlantic trade ties before ending the day with a reception for his youth charity, The King’s Trust.
Security in New York is expected to be tight following a recent alleged assassination attempt against Trump in Washington. Zohran Mamdani is expected to join Charles at the memorial ceremony.
During his address to Congress, Charles stressed that despite disagreements, Britain and America remain united in defending democracy, describing their relationship as one “born out of dispute, but no less strong for it.”
