Britain is celebrating the enduring legacy of Queen Elizabeth II as a global style icon, with a landmark exhibition marking the centenary of her birth.

Opening at King’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace, the showcase features around 300 garments and fashion artifacts that highlight the late monarch’s distinctive style and its lasting influence on British fashion. Widely regarded as the most comprehensive display of her wardrobe ever assembled, the exhibition traces her life, reign, and carefully curated public image.

Known for her belief that “the monarch had to be seen to be believed,” Elizabeth ensured visibility even in Britain’s unpredictable weather. She famously adopted transparent raincoats, allowing her outfits to remain visible rather than hidden beneath dark umbrellas   a practical innovation that became part of her signature look.

Curated by Caroline de Guitaut, the exhibition reflects the Queen’s keen awareness of her appearance. “She had a definite sense of what suited her,” de Guitaut noted, emphasizing the monarch’s deliberate approach to fashion.

Among the standout pieces are elegant ball gowns, tailored tweed suits, and her iconic headscarves   all familiar from decades of public appearances. Yet the exhibition also includes rare and unusual items, such as the outfit worn by her stunt double during the unforgettable opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, when the Queen appeared alongside Daniel Craig in a memorable James Bond-themed sequence.

Together, the collection offers a unique glimpse into how Queen Elizabeth II used fashion not just as personal expression, but as a powerful tool of visibility, identity, and continuity throughout her historic reign.
