Tuesday, April 14

President Donald Trump will address the nation Wednesday night to deliver what the White House described as an “important update” on the war in Iran, according to press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Leavitt announced on social media that Trump’s remarks are scheduled for 9 p.m. ET but did not provide further details about what the president is expected to say.

Trump discussed the war in a phone interview with NBC News on Tuesday, saying the U.S. was “doing great” and that the conflict was “coming to an end.” He also told reporters he expects the U.S. to leave Iran within two or three weeks, adding that Iran does not necessarily have to reach a deal with the United States for the war to end.

His comments came a day after he said the U.S. was negotiating with Iran and making progress, while also warning that Iranian infrastructure could be targeted if a deal to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz was not reached. Iran has denied that any negotiations with the U.S. are taking place.

The war is now entering its second month. Thirteen U.S. service members have been killed and nearly 350 injured since U.S.-Israeli strikes began on Feb. 28, according to a U.S. official familiar with the operations. NBC News also reported this month that Trump had been offered several opportunities to scale back the conflict but declined them.

Meanwhile, Americans are feeling the economic impact of the war, particularly through rising fuel prices.

The average price of gasoline surpassed $4 per gallon on Tuesday, its highest level since 2022, as Iran continues to restrict access to the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route through which about a fifth of the world’s oil supply passes.

Polls show growing public frustration over high oil prices and dissatisfaction with Trump’s handling of the economy. Trump’s last prime-time address to the nation was in December, when he defended his economic record.
