Childhood obesity is expected to become one of the most pressing global health challenges, with new research predicting that the number of overweight children will exceed those who are underweight for the first time in history.

The World Obesity Atlas 2026 estimates that 228 million children aged five to 19 could be living with obesity by 2040.

The report shows that the number of obese children worldwide stood at 177 million in 2025 and is projected to increase significantly over the next decade.

More than 180 countries are already experiencing rising rates of childhood obesity, particularly in low- and middle-income nations where most of the world’s children live.

Experts warn that the rapid growth of obesity poses serious health, economic, and social challenges.

Researchers say the increase is being driven by multiple factors, including maternal health conditions, poor nutrition in early childhood, reduced physical activity, and inadequate breastfeeding during infancy.

The report also highlights the role of unhealthy school meals and sedentary lifestyles.

Childhood obesity is linked to numerous long-term health risks such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers later in life.

However, signs of these chronic conditions are already appearing in children. By 2040, researchers estimate that at least 120 million school-age children could develop early symptoms of chronic disease due to high body mass index.

These health complications may include liver disorders, hypertension, high triglyceride levels, and elevated blood sugar.

Beyond physical health, obesity can also affect children’s emotional well-being, academic performance, and quality of life due to stigma and bullying.

The World Obesity Federation is calling for stronger policy actions to address the crisis.

Recommended measures include improving access to nutritious food, promoting physical activity, strengthening school health programs, and expanding healthcare support for children at risk.
