Nigerians are still waiting for clarity from FIFA after the global football body deferred a decision on a petition filed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) against Democratic Republic of the Congo over alleged player ineligibility during the CAF play-off final for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The Congolese side defeated the Super Eagles on penalties in November to secure a place in an intercontinental playoff for the tournament to be hosted in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
In December, the NFF lodged a formal protest with FIFA, alleging that the Leopards fielded players including Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Axel Tuanzebe both former England youth internationals who were purportedly ineligible under Congolese law, which reportedly does not recognize dual citizenship.
While some Nigerian supporters are hopeful the appeal could offer the Super Eagles a lifeline, others have questioned the legitimacy of qualifying through administrative means, describing such a route as a “back-door” entry to the World Cup.
FIFA has confirmed the matter remains under review but has yet to provide a timeline for a final ruling. The NFF has also dismissed reports suggesting the complaint has been rejected.
“Any claims that a ruling has been made are false,” NFF Director of Communications, Demola Olajire, said.
Appeal Under Review
The football federation maintains that it followed due process in filing its complaint, submitting documentation to back its claims that DR Congo breached eligibility regulations. Should the petition succeed, potential sanctions could include disciplinary measures or forfeiture of points.

NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, has expressed optimism about the strength of the case.
“We have a good case,” Sanusi said. “We do not venture into what would be an exercise in futility. As far as we are concerned, we have a strong case, and we are awaiting FIFA’s decision on the complaints we have lodged.”

FIFA’s disciplinary processes are known to be thorough, but the prolonged silence has fueled speculation and anxiety among fans and stakeholders. The timing of the verdict could significantly impact Nigeria’s qualification ambitions.
