British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has suffered a major social-media setback, losing nearly 500,000 Instagram followers in a single week, as a growing controversy surrounding rapper Macklemore’s removal from his US tour continues to generate anger, protests and divided reactions among fans.
According to figures reported from social-media analytics company Social Blade, Sheeran’s Instagram following fell from about 47.6 million to approximately 47.2 million during the period of intensified controversy.
The sharpest decline came after Sheeran publicly addressed the decision to remove Macklemore from his Loop Tour.
The controversy began after Macklemore, one of the opening acts on Sheeran’s American tour, made outspoken pro-Palestinian comments during performances at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on September 4 and 5. He also performed “Hind’s Hall,” his song associated with pro-Palestinian activism and student protests.

The comments generated strong reactions on both sides of the Israel-Palestine debate.
The Israeli-American Council subsequently called for Macklemore’s removal from the tour, while supporters of the rapper argued that artists should be free to express their views on humanitarian issues.
Macklemore was subsequently removed from the remaining US dates of Sheeran’s tour. The rapper later said that venue owners, including Robert Kraft, had objected to his continued participation.
Sheeran, however, sought to distance himself from the decision. In a statement posted on Instagram, he said the removal was a decision made by the tour promoter after venues indicated they would not host shows with Macklemore. Sheeran also insisted that his reluctance to engage publicly in the political controversy should not be interpreted as meaning that he did not care about the suffering caused by the conflict.
That explanation did little to stop the backlash.
Within a day of Sheeran’s statement, Social Blade data showed a loss of almost 150,000 followers, followed by another significant decline the following day and approximately 98,000 more followers a day later.
By September 23, reports put his Instagram following at around 47.2 million.
The fallout also spread beyond social media.
Several artists associated with Sheeran’s tour announced their departures, including Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe and Irish folk group Beoga.
Their withdrawals were widely interpreted as expressions of solidarity with Macklemore and opposition to the circumstances surrounding his removal.
Irish radio station Classic Hits also announced that it would remove Sheeran’s music from its playlist following feedback from listeners.
The station said its decision was connected to its desire to listen to its audience and stand alongside Irish artists who had made decisions based on their convictions.
The controversy reached another dramatic point on September 19, when Sheeran addressed the issue during his Philadelphia concert.
Appearing emotional, the singer acknowledged that he had made mistakes and apologised to fans.
He spoke about the October 7 attacks in Israel and the devastation in Gaza, describing the humanitarian situation as catastrophic and saying the loss of civilian and children’s lives had deeply affected him.
Yet the apology has not ended the dispute.
Criticism has come from musicians and public figures, including Charlotte Church, who publicly accused Sheeran of prioritising commercial interests over humanitarian concerns. Others, including British Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, have described the situation as an extremely difficult position for the singer.
Meanwhile, Macklemore has pledged $1 million from his tour earnings toward Palestinian aid, while Sheeran has also announced a $2 million donation.
The extraordinary follower decline demonstrates how quickly a celebrity’s public image can become entangled with global political and humanitarian controversies.
For Sheeran, a performer whose career has traditionally centred on music rather than political activism, the Macklemore dispute has forced him into a debate far beyond the concert stage.
With his Loop Tour continuing, the question now is whether the controversy will eventually fade or continue to affect Sheeran’s relationship with sections of his enormous worldwide fan base.
