The Nigerian military has launched a fresh major offensive against terrorists and armed criminal networks operating across the North-West, in a renewed effort to restore security and protect vulnerable communities from persistent attacks.
The operation, code-named Operation Clean Sweep IV, is being conducted by the Joint Task Force North-West, Operation Fansan Yamma, and involves coordinated ground and air operations targeting terrorist formations, logistics routes and suspected operational enclaves.
According to the Theatre Command, the offensive is designed to intensify pressure on terrorist and criminal elements, disrupt their movements and prevent them from expanding their activities or establishing new bases across the region.
Military authorities said the operation reflects a deliberate strategy to deny terrorists freedom of movement and prevent them from regrouping, reinforcing their positions or infiltrating communities.
The offensive comes amid continuing security challenges in parts of Zamfara, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto and neighbouring areas, where terrorist and bandit groups have been linked to kidnappings, attacks on communities, cattle rustling and other criminal activities.
In Katsina State, troops recently carried out clearance operations around suspected terrorist enclaves in Dutsinma Local Government Area.
According to reports, terrorists were forced to abandon their positions following the military pressure, while air assets were subsequently deployed to locate and engage fleeing elements.
The military has also placed particular emphasis on border areas, which security authorities believe are sometimes exploited by criminal groups for movement, logistics and the establishment of temporary enclaves.
The operation is expected to extend beyond conventional terrorist hideouts, with troops also focusing on areas around the River Niger axis and the Kainji Lake National Park.
Authorities said this is intended to prevent terrorists from using the locations as launching platforms for attacks on communities in the North-West.
The renewed offensive follows a series of recent military successes in the region, including operations aimed at rescuing kidnapped civilians and dismantling terrorist networks.
On August 9, Nigerian troops rescued 33 people abducted in Zamfara State after engaging their captors and forcing them to flee.
Security authorities have stressed the importance of intelligence-led operations and cooperation between the military, police, intelligence agencies and local communities.
The latest offensive therefore represents another significant escalation in Nigeria’s campaign against terrorism and violent criminality.
The military high command has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting civilian populations, safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity and denying terrorists the opportunity to establish permanent footholds in the North-West.
For communities that have endured years of insecurity, the success of Operation Clean Sweep IV could provide an important opportunity for the restoration of normal economic and social activities across affected areas.
