Multiple explosions struck Maiduguri, the capital of northeastern Borno State in Nigeria, on Monday, leaving several people feared dead and many others injured, according to state authorities and residents.
Videos shared online showed emergency responders attending to victims at a local hospital, with several individuals seen in bloodied and torn clothing.
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum confirmed that the blasts caused casualties, though he did not provide specific figures or identify those responsible. He condemned the attacks, describing them as “utterly condemnable, barbaric, and inhumane.”
According to security sources and eyewitnesses, the first explosion occurred at a post office in the city centre, followed shortly by another at the busy Monday Market. Additional blasts were reported at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and in the eastern Kaleri neighbourhood later in the evening.
Residents reported seeing bodies at the market scene, but the exact number of casualties and the cause of the explosions remain unclear.
Police spokesperson Nahum Daso Kenneth said security personnel and emergency responders had been deployed across affected areas. He urged residents to remain calm and avoid the locations while investigations continue.
Earlier in the day, the Nigerian military announced that troops had repelled attacks on the outskirts of Maiduguri by suspected Islamist insurgents.
Militant groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province have intensified assaults on military positions in Borno State in recent weeks, killing soldiers and capturing weapons.
