A South African woman has gone on trial for allegedly kidnapping and selling her six-year-old daughter in a case that has gripped the nation and sparked widespread anger.

Racquel Chantel Smith, also known as Kelly Smith, appeared in court on charges of kidnapping and human trafficking linked to the disappearance of her daughter, Joshlin Smith.

The young girl, who vanished in February 2024, remains missing despite an extensive nationwide police search.

Prosecutors allege that Smith orchestrated her daughter’s abduction in exchange for payment. She is standing trial alongside her partner, Jacquin Appollis, and a family friend, Steveno van Rhyn.

All three defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges before them.

The trial is being held in a sports hall in Saldanha Bay to accommodate community members eager to follow proceedings.

The town, located in South Africa’s Western Cape province, became the center of national attention after Joshlin’s disappearance.

In the early days of the search, Smith drew public sympathy, with neighbors and volunteers combing sand dunes near their impoverished settlement in hopes of finding the child. Smith had claimed she left Joshlin in the care of Appollis before the girl vanished.

However, the investigation took a dramatic turn when police detained and later arrested Smith. Authorities revealed in court documents that she had allegedly been planning to sell Joshlin along with her two other children since August 2023. Only Joshlin ultimately disappeared.

Prosecutors further stated that Smith and her daughter were seen entering a white vehicle with a bag of clothes on the day Joshlin was reported missing.

Another woman initially arrested in connection with the case was not charged and is expected to testify for the prosecution.

The case has ignited fury within the local community. According to local media, crowds gathered outside the venue chanting, “We want Joshlin back,” demanding answers and justice.

Presiding over the matter, Nathan Erasmus warned that the accused could face life imprisonment if convicted.

As the trial unfolds, the country watches closely still hoping for answers about the fate of a little girl whose disappearance has left a nation heartbroken.
